Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Carol Concert Spotlights Charity Helpers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will hear a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The focus of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a message before the concert.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
