Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.
The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
