Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
