On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals 10x the recommended threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather begins.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected city leadership appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court complied with the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several recording stations throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe readings seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

The situation in the capital is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating toxic smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous studies.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities per year in the capital.
